Living at the beach, we know how to cool off when the weather turns hot. Currently, Corolla and the Currituck beaches are experiencing prime weather conditions. It won’t be long before you’re here to enjoy the surf and sand with us, right?
When it comes to staying cool, mainland Currituck County also provides a number of opportunities for staying refreshed and relaxed during your vacation. Set up your GPS for some of our favorite stops along the way to the beach, or plan to take a day trip during your beach stay.
Get Wet
With the reopening of the H2OBX Waterpark in Powells Point on May 29, visitors from all over the state and beyond are expected to return to the wave pools, slides and splash zones. If you purchased a pass for the cancelled 2020 season, it’s good for this year! We have all the details about this attraction’s 2021 season.
Raise A Glass
Weeping Radish Farm Brewery and Butchery – North Carolina’s oldest microbrewery – is releasing a new “farm to foam” beer called Beachin’ Barley, made with barley grown entirely on site – another “first” from this brewing pioneer! This new addition to Weeping Radish’s line of beers has a subtle hop taste similar to a German style lager, with a distinct biscuit aroma and a sweet finish. It is available on tap at the restaurant, in individual 16-ounce cans, or in 4-packs. Select retailers on the Outer Banks will also have the beer available.
At nearby Sanctuary Vineyards, this year marks the release of two new wines: Rosé of Aglianico and a blend named White Sand. Visitors can chill with a glass in the outdoor seating area anytime from 10am to 6pm daily. On Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30pm the weekly Acoustic Sunset Wine-Down offers a chance to enjoy live music with the vineyard as the perfect backdrop. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets and spread out on the lawn. You can also reserve a charcuterie to enjoy with your wine. Limited quantities are available on site and pre-ordering is recommended.
Meet a Legend
Currituck County is home to the Grave Digger monster truck championship racing team. When you visit Digger’s Dungeon in Poplar Branch, you can get up close and personal with some of the team’s legendary trucks, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy lunch at the diner.
Fly High
If you really want to stay cool in Currituck, and you have a taste for adventure, you can enjoy the breezes from above the county… two thousand feet in the sky! Kitty Hawk Kites offers select tandem hang gliding lessons and packages at The Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg. You’ll fly along with a certified instructor and enjoy panoramic, 360-degree views of the Currituck Sound and mainland. Keep an eye out for our Wild Mustangs roaming the dunes and other area landmarks like the lighthouse and Whalehead.
Farm Stand Refreshment
Finally, as you drive along Currituck’s main road, Route 158, don’t be surprised if you start getting hungry. Refreshing summer fruits and veggies – including juicy strawberries, watermelon and peaches and fresh tomatoes, beans and squash – await and are perfect to enjoy while on vacation … or to bring back home on your way out of town.
